"Great book!"
Dereck Foster, wine writer, Buenos Aires "Herald" A hard-hitting
summary and the first book in English written about the excellence
of Argentine wines. Nominated for Best Wine Book of the Year-New
York- 1999
"Good books on Argentine wine are rare (I've only ever seen
one before) and here, Alan Young has contributed mightily
with this very engaging book. As an Australian resident in
California, Alan is a refreshing blend. His knowledge is impressive.
From the outset you realize no-one is going to pull the wool
over his eyes and he is going to pull no punches. This approach
is needed when considering the sometimes self-absorbed Argentine
wine industry.
Wine Routes is set within an historical framework that spans
from the down of Latin American viticulture (with) right up
to the minute details, stunning geography, people and personalities.
The photography complements this approach well. One chapter,
Women in Wine, highlights an important aspect of the Argentine
wine scene and illustrates how closely the author has observed
the subject.
Argentina is an enormous country, stretching from rainforest
to frozen wastes. Argentines themselves often cannot grasp
fully this immensity and one can sympathize with the magnitude
of Young's task.
Young exposes the lamentable cartographic situation in Argentina.
He had to commission the maps himself. This is an enormous
chore, hats off to him. One statement raised a smile: 'The
name Argentine Vitivinicultural Association suggests that
here is a body that might assist those in need of information.
Not so; not only do they not assist, they are aggressively
rude...' Been there, got the T-shirt."
